Groups & Clubs

If you would like your group information added or amended please contact us here.

Great Bowden Heritage & Archaeology

We are primarily an action group undertaking a wide spectrum of activities including digs, field walking, displays, archiving, translating and research. We operate individually, in small groups or large, coming together for main events, training and monthly meetings. Meetings progress activities, plan future events, develop new ideas and raise funds.
A sub group meet weekly to clean and identify finds, to examine documents, to research and record material.
We have access to professional expertise including direct liaison with Leicestershire County Council’s Heritage Services and with other groups in the area, occasionally undertaking shared workshops with experts in relevant fields.
Once a year we hold a feast in the Village Hall and actively participate in wider village festivities and events.

Boxercise - Circuit Training - Bootcamps

I started classes at the village hall in Great Bowden in February this year after running successful evening classes in market Harborough since July 2014.

Monday mornings it is Strength & Tone Circuits class which is an all over body workout using body weight exercises, weights, resistance and cardio. During the 45 minute class there is also a HIIT (high intensity interval training) section which is great for burning maximum calories and also a core workout and stretches.

Friday mornings it's time to beat away the stress of the week at Boxercise! This is a workout like no other, you're using the techniques boxers use to train without any of the sparring. A typical session will include learning the punches and defence moves with instruction of combinations of these, fitness drills, games and tabatta training. The 45 minute long class is aimed at all levels of fitness, all ages and abilities, male or female, it's really for everyone! There's no need to bring a partner or even boxing gloves or pads as these are all provided.

Also, hot off the press, is my new Summer Body 8 Week Challenge, an all-in package running from now until the end of July which includes classes, boot camps at Great Bowden recreation ground, 1-on-1 session and a home workout plan all for £45, saving over £20!

The group now formed by keen and committed volunteers ensures the cemetery is looked after.
Working parties as well as a good relationship with Harborough District Council has meant progress is being made to ensure a respectful work ethic and good maintenance practices are continued.

Harborough District Council will continue to provide the essential repairs and maintenance.

There is now a committee operating as The Friends of Great Bowden Cemetery whose mission is "To encourage and support the care and maintenance of Great Bowden Cemetery, preserving a calm and orderly atmosphere for visitors to the final resting place of those they remember."

The committee consists of:-

Great Bowden Village Festival Committee

The Festival committee organise the social event in the village.

The first Great Bowden village festival took place in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It took place over the August bank holiday with the main event being the village fete. It was so well received that the decision was made to hold a festival every 4 years.

More recently the 4-year cycle was altered slightly to coincide with the 2000 millennium celebrations.

Over the years events have included wine tastings, pub quizzes, treasure hunts, dinner dances, barbecues and barn dances. An off-shoot of the Festival is the village panto and the 'Great Bowden Presents...' variety shows.

The Festival ethos is to bring Great Bowden together as a community and raise funds for the village. Over the years money has been donated to Great Bowden primary school, the village hall, the Church and the cemetery.

The festival committee also paid for the village sign on Forge Green and for bulbs to be planted around the village. It has also organised a new village festival shed, partly used by the pre-school, through money donated by the town charity.
