| Dust cloth sellers 18th August 2010 |
In recent weeks we have again received reports of young males going door to door, claiming to be ex-offenders and trying to sell dusters and other items. They will often say or give the impression that this work is part of a rehabilitation scheme for young offenders to help them “go straight” or to “make an honest living”. In the 8 years or so that I have done this job I have liaised with Police Forces from around the country, probation services from all over the UK and I have personally spoken to prison Governors on the subject and I am yet to discover any evidence of a genuine rehab scheme for ex-offenders of this kind. On the contrary I am aware of several occasions when these door to door sales people have committed crimes at the homes of elderly and vulnerable people that they have visited. It would appear that by telling householders that they are ex-offenders, they hope to be seen as honest folk who are simply trying to better themselves. Harborough Police would remind all our residents to be suspicious of anyone arriving unexpectedly at their doors. Always remember that no matter how urgent they make it seem – you do not have to let anyone into your home. Finally, we would remind all householders that if anyone says they are from the “Waterboard”, they are lying (as the Water Board no longer exists) and we would like you to call the police immediately on 999 to give us a real chance of catching these thieves. Please pass this message onto as many people as possible – your assistance is appreciated. |
| 8th August 2010 | An attempted distraction burglary occurred at a dwelling on Western Avenue in Market Harborough on Thursday. Entry was gained by removing padlocks but nothing was stolen. 2 people were dealt with for the possession of heroin following a search in the area of Park Drive in Market Harborough on Thursday. High value tools were stolen from a van parked in a car park on Springfield Street in Market Harborough on Wednesday. Harborough Police would urge all Watch members and Key individuals to spread the word regarding the “Waterboard” method. The simple fact is that there is no such thing as the “Waterboard” anymore as water is supplied and taken away by private companies such as Anglian Water and Severn Trent. As such – anyone claiming to be from the “Waterboard” is lying for criminal purposes and this is when we want people to call the police on 999 to give us a real chance of catching these thieves. |

| CHARITY CLOTHING COLLECTORS – ARE THEY REAL? | It has come to our attention that leaflets are being dropped through people’s letter boxes offering the chance to recycle unwanted clothing. Having read some of these leaflets very carefully, it is obvious to me that in many cases there are some vital pieces of information missing. Some of the leaflets completely leave out the name of the charity concerned. Others state that they will “try” to ensure your clothing donations reach the third world. One of the leaflets in question had only mobile phone numbers listed as contact numbers. Some even ask that you provide you own bags! Harborough police would urge all residents to be cautious as to which charity collection they contribute to. If you are keen to ensure that your donations actually go where you want them to, please take the time to read the leaflets and flyers carefully and if necessary to telephone the numbers provided to confirm that they are who they claim to be. If you have any suspicions about charity collections or you observe any suspicious activity, please don’t hesitate to call the police on 0116 222 2222 or Leicestershire Trading Standards (Consumer Direct) on 08454 04 05 06 or the Charity Commission on 0845 3000 218 |
